Application period for the debate tournament within “Know Your Rights” project,
which is dedicated to rights of national and ethnic minorities to be held on July 2 – 3, 2011 in Horlivka (Donetsk region of Ukraine)
has been prolonged up to May 30th.

The project has been inspired by Foundation Humanity in Action Poland’s @ctivation.pl program on national and ethnic minorities. The implementation of the project “Know Your Rights Debate Tournament” has been possible thanks to the support of the Foundation Humanity in Action Poland and the PZU Foundation.

announce the debate tournament within “Know Your Rights” project,

which is dedicated to rights of national and ethnic minorities

and will be held on July 2 – 3, 2011 in Horlivka (Donetsk region of Ukraine).

This project has been inspired by Foundation Humanity in Action Poland’s @ctivation.pl program on national and ethnic minorities. The implementation of the project “Know Your Rights Debate Tournament” has been possible thanks to the support of the Foundation Humanity in Action Poland and the PZU Foundation.

1. General Information.
“Know Your Rights” project consists of two parts: online studying and a debate tournament:

1.1 During the online course the participants will acquire knowledge of human rights issues related to national and ethnic minorities that may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • civic rights of national and ethnic minorities;
  • linguistic rights of national and ethnic minorities;
  • religious rights of national and ethnic minorities;
  • freedom of speech anf of access to information.

The participants will get materials for individual learning via email or the official project web site and will collaborate with each other in group tasks via the web site, social networking groups or instant messenger systems (e. g. Skype).

Also, they will take part in online debate – text ones on Argumentator and live ones with the help of Web-Debate. Each participant is expected to take part in at least two text and one live debate rounds. Debates will be evaluated by qualified experts and adjudicators. Text and video of the debates will be publicly available at the project’s web site and in social networking groups.

1.2 During two dates of the debate tournament in the city of Horlivka in Donetsk region of Ukraine the participants will compete in 4 selection rounds, half-finals and the final one and also will be engaged in the training on the topical training held by the specially invited expert.

  • Debate format: British parliamentary debates.
  • Languages of the tournament: – in accordance with subpoints d and f of point 1 of Article 12 of European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages and Article 10 of Constitution of Ukraine – Ukrainian and Russian.

The participants will be provided with a cultural environment, particularly a visit to the unque miniature books museum in Horlivka is expected for attending a specially designed lecture on freedom of speech in a historic context.

The preliminary schedule will be announced later. The organizing committee has the right to change the project slightly. Please follow the official project web site.

2. Conditions of Participation
Any arrangement fee is absent.
The paricipants, adjudicators and experts (not living in Horlivka) will be provided with lodging during the debate tournament.
The paricipants, adjudicators and experts will be provided with meals during the debate tournament.
The paricipants, adjudicators and experts (not living in Horlivka) will be partially compensated for return travel expenses to the city of the tournament venue upon receiving the originals of tickets. We kindly ask the paricipants, adjudicators and experts to use discounts provided for them (e. g. student ones) and use buses or trains not higher than compartment (‘kupe”) category. The organizing comittee does not reimburse taxi expenses.
The organizing comittee will provide the paricipants, adjudicators and experts with informational materials and project-related literature, certificates of participation and will compensate the planned excursions.

3. Participants
The tournament will house 24 participants (12 teams) from Eastern Ukraine (regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhya and Dnipropetrovsk) and Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The number of participants from each region will be selected taking into consideration the population in corresponding territories and amount of applications received.
There is no geographical limits for adjudicators and experts.

We also invite experts and trainers on human rights of national and etnic minorities to join the project. The preference will be given to European Voluntary Service, Peace Corps members, those with experience of participation in similar activities. A consecutive interpreting from English to Ukrainian / Russian and vice versa will be provided if necessary. The experts are expected to take part in designing the study course, assessing results of participants’ individual and group tasks as well as development of the seminar on active involvement in human rights defense during the final stage of the project.

4. Registration
4.1. Registration is open as ofMay 6, 2011. In order to register, please fill out the form at http://znayprava.org.ua/register/.

Please, pay your attention to the fact that each participant (teammmte) has to register seperately.
In case of any problems accessing the forms with the help of links provided above, let us know at info@znayprava.org.ua no later than the end of registration.
4.2. In case of a number of applications exceeding a quota of participants the organizing committee has the right to hold a competitive selection.
4.3. Participants that have not been selected will be allocated to the waiting list and may be invited to take part in the project if other participant(s) reject(s), but no later than two and a half weeks before the debate tourmament because of the necessity of online course prior to the tournament.
4.4. May 20, 2011 is the ending date for registration process.
4.5. The results of the selection will be announced no later than May 23, 2011 via the contact information from application forms.
4.6. The selected participants (teams) have to confirm their intent to participate in the project and start the online course no later than May 25.
